Opportunities in boring domains posted on 09 July 2024

As your company grows and becomes successful, the impact of a good infrastructure becomes larger. I would argue that infrastructure becomes more impactful than product launches at some point even if both need to coexist.

I previously wrote about how this is true for software engineers where impact is sometimes/often mostly a lot of tedious work but interestingly enough this is also the case at a company level. In the AI wave, being able to store and process a lot of data is critical and while it is less flashy that building a LLM, I believe it is at the core what will make many AI companies succeed or fail in the long term – in the short term, it’s all about marketing and sales. There is an interesting write up here on Big Data and AI if you want to get more insights.

Among all the companies that reached out to hire me, a few of them are young and profitable – the common denominator is that they do what other companies need but are not interested in building – e.g. billing infrastructure, payment compliance etc.

In the next wave, rather doing what everyone is chasing, it’s probably better to build what they all need instead – in a gold rush, the safest way to make a lot of money is to sell picks and shovels :)
